Beynost est attesté en l'an 1225 avec un Bainoz puis en 1235 avec un Apud Bayno. Le cartulaire des fiefs de l'église de Lyon nous fait découvrir un Baignoz et Baignouz en 1362.

Il semblerait, suivant certains toponymistes, que Beynost dériverait de l'anthroponyme Bagiennus avec un suffixe ligure en -osc; ceci noté avec des réserves.
