Barcelonnette, en provençal Barcilona de Prouvença, est attesté pour la première fois connue dans les écrits avec un Barcilona, nous étions en 1200. En abscence de formes antérieures, il est difficile d'appréhender ce toponyme. Rostaing pense que Barcilona - Barcelonnette dériverait d'un oronyme antérieur à l'arrivée des Celtes en cette région. Il ferait dériver Barcilona - Barcelonnette d'un radical Bar- et -cin- désignant des rochers ou roches aux particularités suffisantes pour êtres identifiées de façon certaine par les habitants de ces lieux. -cin- pourrait, peut-être et avec réserves, être rapproché du Cenn vieil-irlandais définissant une source.

C'est en 1231 que les habitants de la vallée firent allégeance à Bérenger V, Comte de Provence.
