⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Balan, commune de l'Ain, est attesté avec certitude dans l'orbituaire de Lugdunum - Lyon en 1187 et 1255. Nous retrouvons Balan sous la forme Balo dunum et Balaon. Ce Dunum est intéressant et signale l'existence d'un fort, sans doute antérieur aux châteaux établis sur mottes féodales.

L'origine celtique de ce toponyme ne laisse aucun doute et Balan pourrait - avec les réserves qui s'imposent - être rapproché du mot breton Balan désignant le genêt ou la cytise.
