Bagneux nous est attesté sous les formes anciennes Balneolum et Banniolum; et c'est le Cartulaire de Notre-Dame de -Paris qui nous fournit ces informations, comme en 1118 où dce toponyme est cité dans le règlement sur le hôtes respectifs du Roi et du Chapitre. L'année 1417 nous fait découvrir un Bannuex dans Le Journal d'un Bourgeois de Paris.

Ce toponyme dérive du latin Balnĕæ - bain ; à titre anecdotique, cette racine est aussi celle du mot Bagne. Sans doute des sources utilisées à usage thermal fit naitre ce toponyme.
