On vivait par le cœur, on vit par la pensée ;
Mais l’art et la pensée ont aussi leur douceur :
Comme un bel arbre, aimons la colonne élancée !
L’art vrai n’a-t-il donc pas la nature pour sœur ?

Et même les vieillards, ces mornes créatures,
À ce grand mouvement raniment leurs ressorts :
Ils vont causant entre eux de lettres, de peintures,
Et l’esprit les distrait des souffrances du corps.
