Argis est attesté pour la première fois connue dans les écrits en 1242 sous la forme Argil et se retrouve en 1354 sous une forme identique et en De Argillo en 1585.

Ce toponyme serait en liaison avec une zone de terres argileuses; terres importantes à l'époque par leurs diverses utilisations possibles.
