L'Itinéraire d'Antonin nous dévoile un Arcis-sur-Aube vers l'an 160 avec un Artiaca. Nous le retrouvons en 575 sur des monnaies mérovingiennes avec des noms comme Arciaca, Arciacas, Arciacus, puis, toujours la même année, un Archi dans la Chronique de Saint Denis.

Ce toponyme semblerait dériver de l'anthroponyme gallo-romain Artius.
