L'immense majorité des toponymes de Amirat datent des temps les plus anciens, parfois du néolithique ou de la période préceltique, notamment les oronymes et hydronymes.

⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Amirat, idem en occitan, est attesté en 1126 dans le cartulaire de l'abbaye de Lérins avec un Willelmi de Amirad, Wilhelm d'Amirat. Nous retrouvons ce toponyme en 1204 avec un castrum de Anmirat ; l'origine latine de ce toponyme ne laisse planer aucun doute et rappelle que ce village avait quelque chose d'admirable avec des Admiror, Admirantus qui rappellent cette idée.

L'ancien village, installé sur les pentes méridionales des Rochers de Notre-Dame, avait sans doute, par sa situation, quelques chose d'admirable ; peut-être la qualité de vie, suivant les critères de l'époque.
