⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Amifontaine est attesté, pour la priière fois connue dans le cartulaire de Vauclerc, en l'an 1141 et 1153 avec un Amia et Amie. Ce toponyme sera pieux précisé en l'an 1199 avec un Amia Villa rappelant l'existence en ces lieux d'un domaine gallo-romain initial. C'est en 1530 que nous trouvons le priier Amyfontaine correspondant au toponyme et nom de la commune actuel.

Ce toponyme est lié aux sources de la Miette, autrefois Amiette affluent de l'Aisne naissant sur le territoire de cette commune ainsi, il semble, qu'à la racine gauloise Ambe - ruisseau.
