Poète harmonieux que j’admire, que j’aime,
Crois-moi, c’est vainement qu’un Zoïle a jeté
Son envieuse fange à ton beau diadème ;
Il resplendit de gloire et d’immortalité.

Vois la mer, cette mer dont ta muse elle-même
En rhythmes si puissants chanta l’immensité.
De son onde, miroir de la beauté suprême,
L’aquilon veut aussi ternir la pureté.

Qu’importe ! il bat ces flots, les étreint, les secoue ;
il s’épuise en efforts pour les souiller de boue ;
Mais son aile est débile et l’abîme est profond ;

Et la mer, quand se tait la turbulente haleine,
N’en est pas moins brillante et moins pure et moins pleine
D’azur, à sa surface, et de perles, au fond.
