Affringues, en flamand Hafferdingen, est attesté dans une charte de Saint-Bertin en l'an 1182 avec un Hafferdinges, toponyme que nous retrouverons en l'an 1186 sous la forme Arfrenges dans le cartulaire Sithiense. L'année 1191, dans les archives du chapitre de Saint-Bertin, nous délivre un Alverdinga qui est retrouvé avec un Harfredinges en 1197 et archives de l'hospice de Saint-Omer. Hafrenges, Herferenges, Herferenghes se retrouvent en 1212 et 1219 dans le cartulaire d'Auchy. Signalons dans une Charte d'Artois, la forme Rafrenges en 1239 puis Affrenghes en 1364. Après découverte de nombreuses formes anciennes, nous verrons un Affranghes en 1559.

Ce toponyme dériverait de l'anthroponyme germanique Harfridus.
