Achiet-le-Petit est attesté au XII° siècle dans le cartulaire de l'abbaye de Saint-Vaast sous la forme Aisseel et Aichel en 1263 dans les archives du chapitre d'Arras. Si le XIII° siècle nous offre un Assiel; en 1407 apparaît un Assiet-le-Chastellain qui deviendra Aziet-le-Petit en 1651. Nous devons aussi noter un Achiès-le-Petit dit le Petit-Bergam au XVII° siècle.

Ce toponyme pourrait dériver d'un cognonem romain Ascius qui fut retrouvé dans une inscription de Salerne en Campanie. Il est plus probable qu'il dérive - vue la région, d'un anthroponyme germain dérivant de Asca ayant pu dériver vers un Asciacus à l'époque franque.
