Abancourt est attesté dès 1121 sous la forme Abuncurth dans une charte de l'évêque Buchart. Nous le retrouvons en 1125 sous la forme Abankourt et en 1349 sous la forme Asbencort. Curtis désigne un domaine rural et Abbon est un nom propre germanique.

Il s'agit ici de la ferme d'un certain Abon ou Abbon ; sans doute un colon germain qui, au moment où l'Empire Romain se lézardait, put s'établir dans l'Empire et fut doté de terres. Moyennant cette propriété et ces droits, il s'engageait à défendre les frontières de l'Empire. Nous retrouvons un peu cette logique chez les Cosaques qui, moyennant certaines libertés, furent des piliers de l'Empire russe.
